Translated Courses:
Courses are available in English, Native Chinese and translated Chinese.
Please note, not all courses are available in all languages.
Late Registrations:
CASI have introduced late registrations fees. Registrations within 15 days of the course have an extra fee of 10%.
Travel & Accommodation:
We advise not to book accommodation or travel until you have received a confirmation email from CASI that the course will run. Minimum numbers are required for courses to be confirmed. JOI will do their best to ensure all courses run as scheduled.
CASI Member Fees:
Member fees must be paid if you are an existing CASI Member. This includes any course that is not a L1, including retests. We cannot process your registration if your member fees are not up to date.
Course Registration:
Bookings with JOI are open now, and official registrations with CASI will begin in November. At that time, your course will appear in your CASI member profile, where you can download course materials and complete the e-prep.

Level 1
Who Should Take This Course?
You should take this course if you love to snowboard, and have a desire to introduce new students to snowboarding. You should be confident and comfortable both communicating and demonstrating in front of a group.
Am I Ready?
The Level 1 Instructor standards require you to pass both riding and teaching evaluations. In order to help you achieve success on the course, we suggest you take the following steps in preparation, if they are available to you:
- Spend time working as an assistant/apprentice instructor, in order to see a beginner lesson in action.
- Book a lesson with a current CASI Level 1 Evaluator to get feedback on your riding ability in relation to the technical standard.
- Complete the Level 1 course e-prep workshops.
Pre-requisites:
- 15 years of age on the first day of the course (ID must be presented on Day 1)
- Must be fluent in either English or French
- Able to demonstrate comfortable and safe riding skills on intermediate terrain
Description:
The CASI Level 1 Snowboard Instructor certification course is open to strong intermediate snowboarders, aged 14 years and older. Candidates on the Level 1 Course will spend time exploring snowboarding technique and teaching methods across a variety of venues, both on-snow (up to and including intermediate terrain) and during indoor presentations.
The CASI Level 1 course is an introductory course, designed to give successful candidates the skills necessary to begin their role as a new instructor in the industry. Beginner teaching methods, understanding of basic snowboard technique, as well as lesson planning and effective communication skills will be addressed.
Candidates will receive coaching on their snowboarding, as well as feedback on their teaching skills, with the goal of reaching the Level 1 standard in both of these areas. They will also receive suggestions and strategies for long-term development. The successful candidate is certified to teach beginner snowboarders uto the Nop vice Turn level.
The Level 1 certification is a pre-requisite for the CASI Level 2 Instructor certification, as well as the Park Instructor course.

When should I book my travel and accomodation?
CASI courses require minimum numbers to run and while most courses do run, some do not. It is therefore very important you do not make any travel arrangements, until the course is confirmed to be happening. Simply registering for a course is not a confirmation that the course will ultimately run.
How old do I have to be?
You must be 15 years old by the first day of the course.
What if the weather sucks?
Courses will run regardless of weather conditions. The only time a course will be cancelled would be due to either no snow, or the hill being closed due to extreme weather conditions such as severe snow storms, lightning storms, intense high winds, etc.
How good do I need to be?
You should have solid intermediate riding skills. Be able to link turns easily and smoothly on both your toe and heel sides and be in control of your board at all times. Remember, this is a course that teaches you how to become an instructor therefore only half of your overall mark is for your riding skills.
What are the specific riding skills required?
You should be able to ride in control. Keep a consistent speed regardless of terrain, pitch and snow conditions (on intermediate terrain – blue runs). Complete round, finished turns. Ride with your knees flexed. Have the ability to slowly demonstrate a big, wide turn. Have the ability to demonstrate at a very slow speed, basic snowboarding maneuvers such as side slipping & pendulum without losing your balance. The ability to change the size of your turns from large to medium to smaller. Make sure you review the Level 1 Riding Standards video for more info on the riding requirements.
I’ve never taught before…
No problem – that’s what the course is all about. The Evaluators are there to teach you how to teach so you’ll be able to go out and give a great first lesson to new snowboarders. The teaching portion makes up half of your mark. As an instructor, your job is to teach and demonstrate. If you are outgoing, self-confident, and speak audibly and clearly, you are likely the type of person who will do well in the teaching portion of the course. It is also important to be on time, pay attention and ask questions when needed. Be involved and have fun!
I took the course and failed, now what do I do?
If you’ve failed both the riding and teaching components, you’ll have to take the full course over again.
I took the course and only passed part of it, now what do I do?
If you’ve failed either the riding or teaching components, you have 2 years from the date of the course to retake the portion failed. If it is riding, you’ll attend Day 1, and if it is teaching, Day 2.
I’ve passed my Level 1 and want to take another course…

Can I achieve the Level 1 and Level 2 certification in the same season?
Yes – there is no mandatory waiting time between taking the Level 1 and Level 2 course. However, we strongly recommend that you obtain some teaching experience between the two courses, particularly if you have not been snowboarding for many years, and have limited or no teaching experience in other capacities. 4 Day Translated Courses
The Level 1 Translated Courses requires an extra 2 days to allow us to keep the same standards and quality of instruction. As all verbal communication will be translated, the 1 extra days allow time for the evaluators to give all students the same attention they would receive on a 3 day english course.
Who is the translator?
We ensure we use a certified CASI instructor to provide translation. This way, you can be confidfent they are familiar with the CASI method of teaching and that you will receive accurate translation.

Level 2
Who Should Take This Course?
You should take this course if you are a Level 1 Instructor with some teaching experience, love to teach, and have a desire to take your teaching skills to the next level. You should be confident and comfortable demonstrating intermediate to advanced riding in corresponding terrain.
Am I Ready?
The Level 2 Instructor standards require you to pass both riding and teaching evaluations. In order to help you achieve success on the course, we suggest you take the following steps in preparation, if they are available to you:
- Spend time working as an instructor (CASI recommends at least 45 hours of teaching experience as a Level 1 instructor), honing your communication, analysis and group management skills.
- Attend a session with a current CASI Level 2 Evaluator, to get feedback on your riding ability in relation to the technical standard.
- Complete the Level 2 course preparation workshops.
You may also take the Level 2 course as a non-testing participant. Participate in the course and improve your teaching and riding skills without participating in the exams. Non-testing participants will not receive the Level 2 certification but at the completion of the course will receive a certificate of participation.
Pre-requisites:
- Current CASI Level 1 Instructor
- Must be fluent in either English or French
- Able to ride on advanced terrain including un-groomed slopes, and carve controlled turns on intermediate terrain.
Description:
The CASI Level 2 Instructor certification is for any snowboarder that has passed the Level 1 certification, and has an interest in teaching more experienced snowboarders. CASI recommends that Level 2 candidates have prior experience teaching snowboarding in a snow school setting (approximately 45 hours) before attempting the Level 2 certification. This is not a mandatory requirement, and all Level 1 members are welcomed on the course, however, it is recommended in order to help ensure success on the Level 2 evaluations.
The goal of the Level 2 course is to develop a skills-based teaching approach for intermediate snowboarding, as well as an understanding of CASI technique and methodology, and the role of snowboard teaching within the industry. It combines practical snowboard teaching methods, technical understanding and development, as well as development of guest interaction and technical analysis skills.
Candidates will receive coaching on their riding and teaching skills, with the goal of reaching the Level 2 standard in both areas. They will also receive suggestions and strategies for long-term development. The successful candidate is certified to teach snowboarders up to the intermediate level (skills and terrain).
Level 2 is a prerequisite for the Level 3 certification.

Quick Ride System

How old do I have to be?
There is no age requirement however, you must be a current Level 1 Instructor.
What will the Level 2 get me?
To start with, you’ll get training that will allow you to teach intermediate riders. With this, you’ll get more opportunities to teach higher-end lessons, as well as a pay raise (depending on your resort’s policies).
What do I have to do to pass?
Level 2 instructors needs to have solid intermediate riding skills. You should be comfortable riding at moderate speeds on most blue terrain, including blue and black runs. You’ll need to demonstrate that you can carve the snowboard (leaving a “pencil line” in the snow), as well as make short-radius turns on black runs. Teaching wise, you should be comfortable talking in front of a group of experienced riders, and demonstrating intermediate and advanced-level manoeuvres.

Should I have teaching experience?
Teaching experience helps. If you’ve been teaching beginner lessons for a season or so, you should be fine. CASI recommends that you have experience teaching (approx. 45 hours), in order to help you be successful in the Level 2. This is just a recommendation – all Level 1 members are welcome to take the Level 2 certification.
I only passed part fo the course, what do I do now?
If you’ve failed either the riding or teaching components of the Level 2 course, you have 2 years from the date of the course to retake the portion failed. The Level 2 re-test is a two-day re-evaluation (if required). If it is the riding component, you’ll attend Day 1 & 2, and if it is teaching component, Day 3 & 4.
5 Day Translated Courses

Level 3 – New Format
Level 3 has changed from a single 5-day course into 3 separate modules.

- Riding Module – 2-day training + 1-day exam
- Teaching Module – 2-day training + 1-day exam
- Instructor Training (IT) Module – 2-day course with ongoing evaluation (no separate exam)
- Park 1 Requirement:
- Required before registering for Riding and Teaching Modules
- Not required for the IT Module
- Exams:
- Riding and Teaching exams are booked separately (1 day each)
- IT Module includes evaluation — no separate exam needed

Who Should Take This Course?
You should take this course if you are a Level 2 Instructor, along with the Park 1 Instructor certification and plenty of teaching experience, including beginner to intermediate students in a variety of situations. You should love to teach, and have a desire to take your teaching skills to new areas of the mountain – groomed terrain, freeride terrain, and the terrain park. You should be confident and comfortable demonstrating advanced riding skills in corresponding terrain, and have an interest in learning to train fellow instructors.
Am I Ready?
The Level 3 Instructor standards require you to pass riding, teaching and instructor training (pedagogy) evaluations. In order to help you achieve success on the course, we suggest you take the following steps in preparation, if they are available to you:
- Spend plenty of time working as an instructor, honing your communication, analysis and group management skills.
- Ensure you are familiar with the CASI Level 1 & 2 course content and methodologies.
- Attend training sessions with a current CASI Level 3 Instructor or Evaluator, to get feedback on your riding ability in relation to the technical standard. The use of video analysis and feedback can be beneficial.
- Ensure that you have completed the Park 1 Instructor certification.
- Following completion of the course portion, attend the 1-day Level 3 Exam Prep course..
Pre-requisites:
- Level 2 Instructor
- Park Instructor 1
- Comfortable on all types of terrain, including basic freestyle/snowboard park terrain
Description:
The CASI Level 3 Instructor certification is for advanced snowboarders who have passed the Level 2 certification as well as the Park 1 Instructor certifciation, and have an interest in teaching advanced students and begin to train other instructors. The goal of the Level 3 course is to develop a skills-based and situational teaching approach for high-level snowboarding. Also, an understanding of CASI technique and methodology and an introduction to instructor training will be developed. It combines practical snowboard teaching methods, technical understanding and development, as well as development of analysis and session planning skills.
Candidates will receive coaching on their riding and teaching skills, with the goal of reaching the Level 3 standard in three areas: instructor training skills, riding skils (all-mountain freeriding and basic freestyle) and teaching skills. They will also receive suggestions and strategies for long-term development. The successful candidate is certified to teach snowboarders up to the advanced level and lead introductory instructor training sessions. Level 3 is a pre-requisite for the Level 4 certification.
The Level 3 course is delivered in two phases: a course phase where material is presented, and an evaluation phase where exams are conducted. Candidates will leave the course phase with clear feedback regarding performance and potential. Candidates must register for the course and exams portions separately, and are encouraged to take the exams at a later date to allow for training and development time following the course portion.

How many components are there on the Level 3 certification?
There are 3 components: Teaching, Riding, and Instructor Training. Candidates must pass the entire component to receive credit for successful completion.
What are the course pre-requisites?
Before attending the Level 3 Course portion, you need to be a CASI Level 2 Instructor (or equivalent Foreign Affiliate member), as well as a Park 1 instructor. Please note, both of these pre-requisites need to be completed prior to attending the Level 3 Course.
Do I keep the parts that I pass on the Level 3?
Yes, candidates will retain the components that they pass successfully for life.
How long do I have to complete all parts of the Level 3?
There is no time liimit to complete the Level 3 certification. Once you have completed the course portion, you are eligible to attend the exams as many times as you need to finish the certification. You may elect to re-take the course if you require additional training as well.
What info is covered on the Level 3?
The Level 3 course is for those who are interested in teaching advanced snowboarders in all-mountain, freeride and park terrain. Also, you may be looking at starting to train other instructors.
What do I have to do to pass?
Level 3 instructors show advanced level riding skills on most terrain. This includes black runs (groomed and un-groomed), bumps, steeps, as well as small and medium Terrain Park features. You should have the teaching experience to be confident teaching this level of rider, along with the ability to analyze and improve advanced riders’ skills. Please view the Level 3 standards video and Course Guide so you know the exact standards.
Should I take the course separate from the exams?
If possible, yes. CASI recommends taking the course, getting feedback from your Evaluators, and then taking some time to train and perfect your skills before coming back to the exams. Please note, if you register for the course and exams back-to-back, your Evaluator will make recommendations as to the parts of your teaching and/or riding that will need to be improved prior to exams, but they can’t make any predictions as to whether you’ll pass or not. If you are registered for the course and exams together, and you choose not to participate in the exams, you will be subject to CASI’s Cancellation Policy. It is also recommened to attend an Exam Prep session prior to the exams.
Do I need teaching experience?
Yes! The Level 3 certification is a high-level course and evaluation suitable for snowboard instructors with multiple years of teaching experience.

Park 1
New Course Length
Park 1 – 3 days / Translated Park 1 – 4 Days
Who Should Take This Course?
You should take this course if you are a Level 1 instructor with a love of freestyle snowboarding. You should have a desire to introduce new students to snowboarding in the park safely and successfully. You should also be confident and comfortable both communicating and demonstrating in front of a group.
Am I Ready?
The Park Instructor Level 1 standards require you to pass both riding and teaching evaluations. In order to help you achieve success on the course, we suggest you take the following steps in preparation, if they are available to you:
- Spend time working as an instructor, honing your presentation and class management skills.
- Take a session with a current CASI Park Level 1 Evaluator to get feedback on your riding ability in relation to the technical standard.
You may also take the Park 1 course as a non-testing participant. Participate in the course and improve your teaching and riding skills without participating in the exams. Non-testing participants will not receive the Park 1 certification but at the completion of the course will receive a certificate of participation.

Description:
The CASI Park Instructor certification course is open to members with a minimum Level 1 Instructor Certification. Candidates on the course will spend time exploring snowboarding technique and teaching methods as they relate to introductory terrain park and freestyle snowboarding.
The Park Instructor course is an introductory course, designed to give successful candidates the skills necessary to introduce students to the terrain park and freestyle snowboarding safely. Progression-based teaching methods, understanding of basic freestyle techniques, as well as lesson planning and effective communication skills will be addressed. Candidates will receive coaching on their snowboarding, as well as feedback on their teaching skills, with the goal of reaching the Park Instructor standard in both of these areas. They will also receive suggestions and strategies for long-term development. The successful candidate is certified to take students into freestyle terrain, and teach introductory / basic manoeuvres on beginner terrain park features.

Park 1 Riding Standards
When should I book my travel and accomodation?
CASI courses require minimum numbers to run and while most courses do run, some do not. It is therefore very important you do not make any travel arrangements, until the course is confirmed to be happening. Simply registering for a course is not a confirmation that the course will ultimately run.
Do I need to be an instructor first, before taking the Park 1 Instructor Course?
Yes, you’ll need to be a minimum Level 1 instructor.
How good do I have to be to pass the Park Course?
The Park Instructor Level 1 course is aimed at giving you tools to take students into the park for the first time safely. You won’t be hitting the big lines, but will be focusing on basic skills on the small features, and improving your teaching skills. Check out the Park Instructor video and Course Guide for more info.
3 Day Translated Courses
The Level 1 Park Translated Course requires an extra 1 day to allow us to keep the same standards and quality of instruction. As all verbal communication will be translated, this extra days allows time for the evaluators to give all students the same attention they would receive on a 2 day english course.
Who is the translator?
We ensure we use a certified CASI instructor to provide translation. This way, you can be confidfent they are familiar with the CASI method of teaching and that you will receive accurate translation.

• No transfers permitted
• CASI does not allow new registrations within 2 weeks of a course

If a transfer is not possible, the cancellation policy applies automatically. -
Medical-related requests may be considered case-by-case, and require valid supporting documentation.

JOI may cancel or reschedule programs without notice.
In such cases, course fees will be refunded in full.
JOI and CASI-ACMS are not responsible for travel, accommodation, or other personal expenses. -
CASI membership dues are non-refundable.

Park 2
Who Should Take This Course?
You should take this course if you are a minimum Park 1 Instructor with a love of freestyle snowboarding and experience teaching in the park. You should have a desire to help students refine existing tricks and learn new ones safely and successfully. You should also be confident and comfortable both communicating and demonstrating refined basic freestyle riding skills in front of a group.
Am I Ready?
The Park Instructor 2 standards require you to pass both riding and teaching evaluations. In order to help you achieve success on the course:
- The best preparation is experience. Spend time working as a snowboard instructor, honing your presentation, demonstration, analysis and class management skills.
- Developing freestyle skills requires significant mileage; try to find ways to incorporate freestyle elements into your riding and make time to go through the park. You should be in good physical condition to perform all required maneuvers over the duration of the course.
- Take a session with a current CASI Park Evaluator to get feedback on your riding ability in relation to the technical standard
Pre-requisites:
- Current CASI Park 1 Instructor
- Must be fluent in either English or French
- Able to demonstrate comfortable and safe riding skills on intermediate terrain, as well as basic terrain park features.
Description:
The Park Instructor 2 course is an intermediate course, designed to give successful candidates the skills necessary to develop students’ freestyle snowboarding skills safely and effectively.
Courses do not include:
- Lift pass
- Accomodation
- Meals

CARVING
Who Should Take This Course?
You should take this course if you are a minimum Level 2 Instructor with a love of carving snowboarding and experience teaching on groomers. You should have a desire to help students refine carving techniques and learn new ones safely and successfully. You should also be confident and comfortable both communicating and demonstrating refined carving skills in front of a group.
Am I Ready?
The Carving Instructor Certification standards require you to pass both riding and teaching evaluations. Answer Yes or No to the following questions to evaluate your readiness for the CASI Carving course:
- Have you spent time working as a snowboard instructor, developing your presentation, demonstration, analysis, and class management skills—especially at higher speeds?
- Have you dedicated time to develop your carving skills by riding regularly and putting in focused mileage?
- Are you in good physical condition and able to perform technical exercises over multiple days of training?
- Is your equipment appropriate for high-performance carving, and well-tuned to support your development during the course?
- Have you taken a session with a CASI Carving Evaluator or received direct feedback on your carving in relation to the technical standard? Not mandatory, but can be helpful.
If you answered “Yes” to all of these questions, you’re likely well prepared to take on the Carving Instructor course.

The Carving Instructor course is designed to provide you with the tools to develop the carving skills of students who are already familiar with the basics. You should be confident in demonstrating refined intermediate carving techniques, including linked carved turns on varied terrain, transitions between different types of turns, and comfort with speed control and edge engagement on steeper terrain. Re-Tests
Re-Tests can be done in 2 ways.
1. JOI will try to organise a special 1 day retest for all re-test students at the same time. Please check the schedule for Special Re-Test days
2. If there is a space on a scheduled course then we may be able to add you to the course as a re-test student subject to availability.

CASI Re-Test Days (JOI)
Japan Outdoor Institute (JOI) offers dedicated Re-Test Days so that candidates can complete their
CASI Riding or Teaching re-tests without needing to join a full course again.
These special Re-Test Days are available for CASI Level 1, Level 2, and Park 1 candidates only.
What is a Dedicated Re-Test Day?
A dedicated Re-Test Day is a 1-day session set up by JOI specifically for candidates who need to
complete a re-test. Instead of waiting for an open spot on a regular course, you can join a Re-Test Day
and focus only on the component you need:
- Riding Re-Test
- Teaching Re-Test
Both Riding and Teaching re-tests can be completed on these days, depending on availability.
Why Did JOI Create Re-Test Days?
Regular courses often fill up quickly, which can make it difficult for re-test candidates to find space.
To support candidates who have already completed a course and only need to re-test one component,
JOI created dedicated Re-Test Days to:
- Provide more flexible options for scheduling re-tests.
- Allow candidates to focus only on their missing component.
- Reduce the need to wait for cancellations in full courses.
How Does It Work?

The examiner is there to conduct a re-test only, not to re-teach the full course.
Please carefully review your feedback from your previous course and make sure you have
implemented the required changes in your riding or teaching before the Re-Test Day.

The Re-Test Day is an assessment only. The examiner is there to assess your riding or teaching —
not to re-teach the full course. Please make sure you arrive fully prepared by reviewing your previous feedback
and using the resources below.

- Regular practice before your re-test is strongly recommended.
Training and feedback are provided during your original course.
For the re-test, your success depends on how well you have applied that feedback beforehand.

- Understand the SAFE lesson format: Static, Active, Free, Experiment

- Varied terrain (e.g. bumps)
Normal Course Re-Tests
In addition to JOI’s dedicated Re-Test Days, candidates may also complete their re-tests
by joining specific days of a regular CASI course, subject to availability.
This option is suitable for candidates who are happy to integrate into a full course
for one assessment day only.
