Join our certified Mountain & Ski Guides for a 3 day epic high alpine trip and training in Tateyama Toyama/Nagano Japan – the famous Kurobe Alpine Route brings you to 2500m elevation where your onsen lodges sit above a beautiful natural basin towered over by 3000m wonders for touring and mountaineering – Mt Tateyama & the famous spear TsurugiDake !
For skiers – the area only opens mid April due to so much snow to be cleared – meaning in case you thought the powder season is over – it is your best place to get late season powder in Nagano!
Tateyama Spring Alpine Tour & Training – We offer a range of experiences:
- Alpine Ski Touring – standard setup backcountry touring days (no lifts – all sweat & effort)
- Ski-Mountaineering – Combined skiing, boot packing and climbing with ropes, crampons & grit
- Alpine Mountaineering/Climbing – A boots in approach to climb challenging faces to the summit of TsurugiDake
- Avalanche Skills Training – We also will open an AST1 training & snow safety courses on request for groups 6ppl+
Accommodation Options: We stay at the very comfortable Murodo-Sanso lodge & Ichinokoshi Sanso lodge – with onsens for evening relax.
Reserving a group private room with breakfast, lunch & dinner. Starting from ¥13,000 p/night/person
Groups: Per guide we limit groups to 4ppl maximum or assign 2 guides for groups up to 8ppl maximum
Skill level: Skiers need to be advanced skiers with multiple trips in backcountry
Fitness level: Needs to be high and ability to climb 800m elevation gain comfortably per day
Gear: It is possible to rent gear as needed – we do recommend that you are comfortable, tested and know the gear you bring as there are no gear and repair shops available on mountain.
Non-Skiers – are also welcome and can participate in multiple programs for hiking, photography, or enjoy the scenes and relax at lodge.
Participant Cost:
Training & Tour fee: ¥120,000 p/person for JOI guided tour & training – 3 days
Additional costs: Kurobe Route Transport approx ¥9,000 p/person
Accommodation: 3 days / 2 nights with breakfast & dinner approx ¥30,000 p/person
Itinerary: Example for multiple activities
DAY 01
07:30 – Meet at Kurobe bus terminal (buy tickets online to avoid full)
08:00 – Load and head up to Murodo – Bus / Cable car / Tram / Hike
09:30 – Check in Accommodation & drop gear
10:30 – Bring lunch and head out for day activities
16:00 – Cut off to return to lodge for evening, onsen, dinner
Ski-Mountaineering & Climbing will do focused training, skills and gear preparation for next day
DAY 02
06:30 – Breakfast & first out get the first tracks!
08:00 – Try to be out the door latest to get 3 climbs and long runs in for the day
16:00 – Return to lodge for evening, onsen, dinner
(weather permitting and clear skis – a night hike is amazing in Tateyama)
Ski-Mountaineering & Climbing will make alpine starts (05:00) to climb TsurigiDake
DAY 03
06:30 – Breakfast & pack up room
08:00 – Earlier the better for the shorter day to get a lot of activities done
14:00 – Return lodge to get gear, change and make way out to Murodo station
17:00 – Return back to Kurobe station to depart
Ski-Mountaineering & Climbing will do one more summit climb to Mt Tate or Okudainichidake
Personal Mountain Insurance: Everyone participating needs to have personal mountain insurance – this is cheap and affordable for 3 days approx ¥4000 / please see below options (translate to english as needed)

Other details :
1. Minimum Participant: A minimum of 4 persons are necessary for the activities to proceed – if the quota is not reached JOI will notify and offer to either shift to another day / credit or if not refund your fee
2. Weather: Training & schedule is weather dependent for safety. During extreme storms training may be delayed or postponed to another date. Due to weather, if we can not move to another day we will then either credit or refund your payment.
3. Risk acceptance: in attending this training or tour with JOI you acknowledge that you will be undertaking an ‘high-risk’ activity which can cause harm or death in a wilderness environment where medical care is not available immediately. You may also be in areas without mobile signal.
Every participant needs to complete our JOI risk acceptance form prior to the training / tour
4. Insurance: JOI covers activities & rescue under Tokio Marine Insurance – however in signing up you acknowledge and accept to take out personal emergency medical and rescue insurance. See above options
5. Satellite Emergency Beacon & ERP: Our guides carry Garmin InReach with full satellite coverage in the case of an emergency with rescue notifying emergency contacts and activating local rescue authorities
