DESCRIPTION

LEVEL 1 COURSE | 3-DAY BEGINNER–INTERMEDIATE INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION

The Level 1 course prepares both new and experienced instructors to confidently teach and guide beginner to intermediate mountain bikers in both cross country and downhill environments. New instructors gain essential tools to teach safely and effectively, while experienced instructors deepen their knowledge of teaching methods and riding theory.

A strong focus is placed on developing teaching skills as a core part of being a professional instructor. Through guided practice and feedback, you’ll learn that being a good rider is just one part of the job.

Each day includes time for learning theory, practicing skills, and receiving personal feedback. Additional PMBIA Workshops on bike fit, mechanics, and first aid are also included to further build your knowledge.

For information on re-certifying, re-tests, or transitioning from other certifications, please see the FAQ page.

WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?
  • Develop a passion for teaching: Learn how to teach with clarity, structure, and confidence, not just ride well. This course gives you the foundation for becoming a safe, fun, and effective instructor.
  • Recognized certification: Earn the world’s most widely adopted mountain bike instructor credential, the PMBIA Level 1 Certification.
  • Practical teaching and riding skills: Learn how to plan and deliver skill- and maneuver-based lessons in both XC and downhill settings, and guide groups safely on technical terrain.
  • Have fun: It’s three days of riding bikes, learning, and getting stoked!
  • Become your own coach: With a deeper understanding of technique and learning theory, you’ll be able to analyze and improve your own riding.
  • Boost your riding: Refine core skills like cornering, climbing and descending, front/rear wheel lifts, and roll-downs — all while learning how to teach them.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR? AM I READY?
  • Intermediate riders who are confident and experienced, passionate about biking, and even more passionate about teaching and helping others.
  • People with strong communication skills who are comfortable demonstrating and speaking in front of groups.
  • Riders who consistently use good technique on technical blue and black trails (based on North American ratings), and can perform fundamental maneuvers such as front and rear wheel lifts, level lifts, and roll-down drops. These skills should be emerging, if not consistent, before attending the course—remember, the course is about learning to teach these skills.
  • Those comfortable leading and riding with groups outdoors, while being responsible for the safety and well-being of others, including adults and children.
READING MATERIALS & WORKSHEET: 2–3 HRS

The pre-course prep is essential to get the most from your PMBIA training. It includes reading the PMBIA Reference Guide and Level 1 Course Booklet, and completing the mandatory Level 1 Worksheet. This takes approximately 2–3 hours and will be available in your member profile after registration.

COURSE LOGISTICS

LEVEL 1 TEACHING

Candidates will be assessed on their teaching skills during a minimum of four, 10–20 minute practice teaching sessions. These sessions allow candidates to ‘practice teach’ with their peers in both trail and open area settings, and receive feedback from the PMBIA Trainer.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

Candidates must plan and deliver safe lessons, guide students on appropriate terrain, manage the group effectively, and demonstrate clear use of the Lesson Format, Training Wheel, and I.D.E.A. Progression teaching models.

Examples of Level 1 Teaching Standards include:

  • Consistently prioritizes safety and guiding over teaching.
  • Selects safe, appropriate terrain for student practice.
  • Uses Lesson Format & Training Wheel consistently for well-structured, safe, and effective lessons.
  • Explains using what/why/how with developing fluency.
  • Demonstrates correct techniques consistently.
  • Begins to assess students and provide positive, simple feedback.
  • Emerging use of I.D.E.A. Progression for structured lesson delivery.
  • Basic bike setup and maintenance: bike fitting, suspension sag and rebound, flat tires, broken chains, brake pad replacement, headset adjustment, cleaning and care.
LEVEL 1 RIDING

Riding skills are assessed throughout the course during trail and open area sessions. There is no isolated ‘ride-off’ assessment, helping maintain a low-stress, progressive learning environment.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

TERRAIN

Candidates should be confident on technical green, blue, and single black diamond trails, based on challenging, B.C.-style terrain. For example, a B.C. blue trail may equate to a black trail elsewhere.

Riders must climb and descend intermediate, rough terrain with consistency, demonstrate core maneuvers, and maintain enough mental bandwidth to teach effectively. While expertise on black trails isn’t required, being able to ride them increases comfort and capability on blues. Instructors must demonstrate beginner to intermediate skills at ‘demo quality’ to provide clear visuals for students.

RIDING SKILLS

  • Stable and balanced body positions (Climbing, Neutral, Ready) with range of movement.
  • Efficient cadence and smooth shifting.
  • Controlled braking without skidding on loose terrain, using both brakes.
  • Consistent trail scanning for flow and efficiency.
  • Emerging bike-body separation skills (angulation, rotation).
  • Climbing and descending technical green/blue/easy black singletrack.
  • Cornering on banked and flat terrain.
  • Maintains line in uneven, rooty or rocky terrain.

RIDING MANEUVERS

  • Standing front and rear wheel lifts.
  • Seated, pedaling wheel lift.
  • Emergency stop with a strong, stable position and minimal skidding.
  • Slow, tight switchbacks.
  • Roll-downs and rollable drops.
LEVEL 1 WORKSHEET

Candidates must read the Level 1 Course Booklet and PMBIA Reference Guide, and complete the Level 1 Worksheet.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

The reading and worksheet take approximately 2–4 hours and serve as the written portion of the assessment.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

WHAT’S THE MINIMUM AGE FOR THE COURSE?
The minimum age for the Level 1 Course is 15 years old. However, the PMBIA does recommend instructors younger than 17 work with an assistant coach of legal age to help deal with any personal, first aid, or emergency situations, should they arise.

WHAT RIDING SKILLS ARE REQUIRED?
You should be comfortable on technical green, blue, and single black diamond trails. These ratings are based on Whistler/B.C. standards, which may be more challenging than other regions. You should also be confident climbing and descending intermediate, rough terrain, cornering with speed, and performing maneuvers such as front/rear wheel lifts, pedal lifts, and small roll-down drops. For more details, check the PMBIA Riding & Teaching Standards.

I’VE NEVER TAUGHT BEFORE, IS THAT OKAY?
The Level 1 course is designed for people who have never taught before as well as those with years of experience. Everyone learns differently, and the course is designed to help you develop regardless of your background.

DO I NEED MY FIRST AID CERTIFICATE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE COURSE?
No. While PMBIA strongly recommends all instructors be a minimum 40hr Wilderness/Outdoor First Aid certified before working, you do not need certification prior to taking the course.

CAN I TAKE THE LEVEL 1 AND 2 IN THE SAME YEAR?
PMBIA recommends teaching for at least a season between Level 1 and Level 2. However, strong riders with teaching backgrounds may complete both in the same season. Technically, you can register for Level 2 immediately after Level 1, but be sure you are fully ready.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

WHAT’S THE MINIMUM AGE FOR THE COURSE?
The minimum age for Level 2 courses is 17 years old. Teaching and guiding mountain biking is inherently dangerous at this level. Because instructors are legally responsible for both adults and children, PMBIA requires a higher minimum age.

DO I NEED MY FIRST AID CERTIFICATE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE COURSE?
No. While PMBIA strongly recommends a minimum 40hr Wilderness/Outdoor First Aid certification before working as an instructor or guide, you do not need a first aid certificate to participate in the course.

WILL THE COURSE RUN IF IT’S RAINING?
Yes, courses run rain or shine. Mountain bike instructors and guides must be prepared to work in all outdoor conditions. Unless there is lightning or truly extreme weather, the course will go ahead. Bring spare gloves and socks for comfort in wet or cold weather.

CAN I TAKE THE LEVEL 1 AND 2 IN THE SAME YEAR?
PMBIA recommends teaching for at least a season between Level 1 and Level 2 to help consolidate your teaching and guiding skills. However, experienced instructors (e.g., Level 3 Snowboard Instructors) who are strong, confident riders may be able to complete both in the same season. CROSSING OVER FROM OTHER CERTIFICATIONS

WHY DO I NEED TO START WITH PMBIA LEVEL 1 IF I’M ALREADY CERTIFIED OR EXPERIENCED?
The PMBIA Level 1 course is more aligned with IMBA/BICP Level 2 and serves as a critical foundation for teaching within the PMBIA system. Even instructors certified elsewhere, or with significant coaching or racing experience, consistently find Level 1 essential due to PMBIA’s unique methodology and progression model.

PMBIA Level 2 is an advanced course that assumes you understand and can apply the concepts from Level 1. Without that background, even skilled riders may struggle to teach effectively or succeed in the Level 2 environment. PMBIA has seen many experienced professionals—including Level 2-certified instructors from other systems—gain the most value by starting with PMBIA Level 1.

The continuation of learning from Level 1 to Level 2 is fundamental to building consistent, safe, and effective instruction. PMBIA’s standards are designed to raise the bar for mountain bike teaching globally, and starting with Level 1 ensures all instructors are prepared to deliver the highest quality training to their students.

The 2-day AIR or TECH Development Modules are also great preparation for the full 4-day certification courses.

INJURIES

I GOT INJURED AFTER REGISTERING. WILL I GET A REFUND?
PMBIA expects all participants to stay healthy and make smart riding decisions before the course. Injury-related cancellations require a doctor’s note (submitted within five business days of the course start date) and may result in a 50% refund or course transfer. If you fail to notify us before the course begins, no refund will be issued. Once the course has started, refunds are not possible.

I HAVE HAD AN INJURY OR CONCUSSION. SHOULD I STILL PARTICIPATE?
The PMBIA strongly recommends not participating in a course if you are not 100% physically and mentally capable—especially after a concussion. If you have any concerns, please consult your physician. You will be riding and thinking intensively over multiple days. Disclose any past injuries before registering.

Courses require minimum enrollment and significant planning including permits and scheduling. Our injury policy ensures fairness for other participants and helps PMBIA, a not-for-profit organization, run sustainably.
